Most people, including Christians, still think that the most important thing is what you DO, how good of a person you are. It’s this idea that true righteousness rests in how many good things we do during our lives. But, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus turns that idea on its head; He makes it clear that true righteousness is internal righteousness, and all of our outward actions should flow from a heart that is in tune with God. That’s precisely what we see Him talking about in our passage today. He is taking the righteousness described in the Law from mere outward obedience to an internal commitment to having a truly Godly character. That’s why this passage is so important to help us understand what true righteousness is; to help us understand that, while external actions and behaviors are important, true righteousness goes deeper than that.
