As we will see going through this letter, false teachings and heresy are running rampant in the early church, and the leaders of this nascent Christian movement are having to contend with these things at every turn. These are the issues that we saw John dealing with in his letters, and it is the issue that we are going to see Jude deal with in his letter. And, what we are going to see is that the specific issue that Jude finds himself contending with is the idea that God’s grace serves as a license to sin. Once again, just like with John, we see false teachers had risen up, and they were deceiving good Christians by claiming to have divine revelation and leading the churches down the path of animalistic self-indulgence. So, because of this, Jude is writing this letter to urge believers to contend for the truth and not succumb to the false teaching. As such, it reminds us of the urgency and importance of contending for the faith even today.
